True Sovereignty Becoming a Constitutional Republic Canada has spent over 150 years as a nation under the rule of the British Empire or what is leftover of the empire. While we consider Great Britain as friends with Canada, it is time in our history for us to cut the umbilical cord and become our own free Constitutional Republic… a nation who owes no other nation anything… a nation that can stand upon it’s own two feet without help from anyone else. Some Impediments I’m pretty sure that Quebec and New Brunswick would quickly vote in favour of such a measure, since the French have never savoured being under the thumb of the English. Yet as part of the building of Canada there were several treaties made with indigenous peoples of this land. Let me ensure all of our native peoples that making Canada a constitutional republic will be very much in their best interests. “Treaties are sacred” they might say and we agree. And that is why as a constitutional republic, Canada will honour every single one of those treaties and will take the place of the Crown in each and every treaty. In fact we will sign off on that fact! Once we do become a constitutional republic, we will go one step further. Reservations never should have been created in the first place in this great land. The idea from the start should have been to share the land with indigenous peoples. In fact I have read over and over that this was the intent of the indigenous peoples ….to share the land with the new settlers. In this way, indigenous peoples were far more honourable than the settlers who came here from Europe! The Europeans instead pushed indigenous people to the side to satisfy their greedy instincts! So not only will we honour all treaties, but we will extinguish the “Reservation System”. It will become a thing of the past… a thing of history…a history that was quite honestly discriminatory and just plain wrong! It’s time our indigenous peoples become part of our nation in the true and fair sense… on an equal footing! And that means also sharing in the nation’s richness! What do I mean by this? Will rights and benefits be extinguished too? Absolutely not. Rights and benefits will be greatly expanded! No longer will a reservation be called a “reservation”. It will be called a “Territory” of Canada. As we have seen many indigenous peoples prefer to be called “First Nations”. Although this name doesn’t apply to Inuit peoples, the concept is still the same as founding peoples of the land. And this concept is that they have “nationhood”. But … they are also part of the nation called Canada. We can’t get away from that and history has shown us that to think that way would be naive at best! So what is the solution? Well, we see that Canada is made up of provinces and territories. In the north we have 3 terrritories including the Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Although they don’t have the same status as provinces in terms of elections, this is mostly due to the sparse populations within these territories. If their populations expanded to be similar to the south, they would be afforded similar status in terms of elections…more voting power! So what we will do is create a number of new “territories” within Canada that encompass current First Nations and Inuit peoples. So in terms of what they are called, it will be a much more respectful and inclusive term but also one reflecting a greater purpose within the nation of Canada! Is that all we’ll do? Just a name change? Far from it! You know, I’ve lived among indigenous Canadians as a school teacher for 13 years now. Although not an expert, I’ve come to know much about the Cree, Dene and Oji-Cree peoples from teaching their children and interacting and living in their communities. Native peoples love to be active indoors and outdoors and my role as a physical education teacher and Athletic Director created many opportunities for me to interact in awesome ways in terms of sport in both Ontario and Saskatchewan. In speaking with my indigenous friends over the years, it has become quite apparent that certain things are crucial to their self-identity and how they look at life in general. And interestingly, the things that identifed them most were the things that were taken from them! First and foremost are their languages. Secondly is their relationship to “The Land”. Native peoples have been “caretakers” of the land of “Turtle Island” for over 10,000 years! In comparison, Canada’s history of just over 150 years is like a “drop in the bucket”! As mentioned, the original indigenous intent that I’ve come to know, from many readings, videos and even from personal relations is that they intended to “share the land” with the new settlers… not to have it taken away from them. But as history tells us over and over.. .those who are powerful are often greedy as well. And so we are where we are! But what can we do to rectify the situation? Can it ever be totally recified? Well sure… all you people of European ancestry….just pack up your stuff and head on back to Europe. “What do you mean? I’ve lived here my whole life… I was born here”…. Ok… that’s not going to work and is pretty naieve if you believe that’s ever going to be a solution! So much for that idea! But there is another possible solution….one that the Freedom Party of Canada will pursue. And that is “Give some of the land back”. Yes, you heard that right! We plan to greatly expand the land of current reserves (soon to become territories). “How much?” you ask. I can’t give you exact amounts ….but it will be a lot! There may be negotiations with different First Nations to see first if they wish to “amalgamate” into larger territories. For example, you may have two Cree First Nations that are an hour apart from each other. Whereas currently they do not have title to the land between them, they may be given title to all the land between them so that they can become one “territory”. This is just an example, each situation will have to be planned and agreed upon. If two First Nations don’t like each other, that might not work. Every situation will be different. But none of this can happen until we become a “constitutional republic” first, severing all ties with Great Britain! In order to do this, we will put it to a referendum of the Canadian public with a vote of over 50% being enough to become a sovereign nation for the first time in our history! In addition to the above, we have a radical idea. For every adult in this country aged 21 and older, we plan to give them for free, 2 acres of land. Yes, 2 acres of land! It’s time Canadians started sharing in the richness of this land! And we plan to do so much more. Down the road we even plan to make energy (electricity) free!!! This was the dream of the great Nikola Tesla! Imagine how much more Canadians could prosper without all these huge utility bills hanging over their heads! This is only the beginning of a truly great Canada, one that is not beholden to other countries, world organizations etc., one that is totally self-sufficient, free and prosperous! Canadian Sovereignty in the Arctic Our sovereignty is not just about being our own independent nation. It is also about protecting our sovereignty in the Arctic! Many have predicted a future with possible passage through Canada’s northern waters. We have to make sure we patrol our northern waters and keep our north safe and assert our sovereignty there! The Freedom Party of Canada will commit to 3 large ice breakers to patrol our northern waters and assert our sovereignty year round. We will also have some military bases created in the north for training purposes as well.
